In early 2013, a California high school student entered his first period class and shot a student in the chest. He then attempted to shoot a second student before surrendering. Fortunately, there were no fatalities; however, the incident gained attention when the injured student filed a civil lawsuit against the school. In 2019, a jury found the school negligent in preventing the shooting, a verdict that was upheld in a 2022 appeal.
