Timothy Roberts, Ph.D.
Dr. Timothy Roberts is the vice president and director of the Advanced Technology Assessment Division, leading more than 30 analysts who evaluate the military utility and efficacy of emerging defense technologies and prototypes. These include analysts deployed to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center/TOPGUN; the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Operational Test Team; and Commander, Task Force 70, embarked on the carrier USS George Washington.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Roberts has led the Strike and Air Warfare Program that conducts analysis of Navy and Marine Corps aviation systems and tactics—the largest program in the Center for Naval Analyses. As an analyst, he directed many studies, including Future Air Wing Operations with Joint Strike Fighter Aircraft for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations and one of the Navy’s primary analyses of Operation Iraqi Freedom, focused on carrier and air wing capacity and utilization. For a year, he was the CNA field representative embedded with Carrier Strike Group Eight.
Prior to joining CNA in 1994, Dr. Roberts was a materials science researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory. He holds a PhD in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering and materials science from Carnegie Mellon University.
