Race/Ethnicity.  The percentages of FY 1997 Selected Reserve officer accessions and officer corps by race/ethnicity are shown in Table 6.2.  The proportions of Black and Hispanic officer accessions in the Selected Reserve are comparable to the proportions in the Active Component (Blacks:  Active - 8 percent, Reserve - 8 percent; Hispanics:  Active - 4 percent, Reserve - 3 percent).  In FY 1997, the Active Component accessed more new officers of "Other" race/ethnicity than the Selected Reserve (7 percent versus 5 percent), but the Reserve Component maintained the same proportion as the Active Component of "Others" in their officer corps (4 percent each).

 The Army components of the Selected Reserve have the highest proportions of Black and Hispanic officers (Blacks:  ARNG 7 percent/USAR 14 percent; Hispanic:  both 4 percent), while the USNR has the lowest (Blacks:  3 percent; Hispanics 2 percent).  In the remaining components, the proportions of Black officers range from 4 to 6 percent and the proportions of Hispanic officers are all approximately 3 percent.
