The China and Indo-Pacific Economic Statecraft Initiative

CIP’s Economic Statecraft Initiative (ESI) analyzes and tracks China's efforts to use economic resources to exert influence overseas in pursuit of its national objectives. ESI supports US national security leaders and organizations' understanding of the national security implications of the PRC's economic statecraft activities for the United States.

Research and analysis includes:

Analytic support to investment screening

Examination of emerging PRC laws, economic policies, and regulations

Development of workshops and training sessions on the tactics and techniques PRC actors use to acquire technology and circumvent US regulations

China has successfully obtained foreign defense technologies using a range of legal economic tools. Obtaining these technologies advances China’s national security goals, and undermines the security and commercial interests of the United States and its allies.
