With the increased interest in mastery learning, schools are asking how to implement the approach. Research describing how the process plays out in today’s classrooms is limited, however.
This study explored how three Kentucky high schools defined and implemented mastery learning to promote deeper understanding of academic content and improve college and career readiness for all students. Data were collected from interviews of staff at the classroom, school, and district levels and from review of documents with policies related to mastery learning.
The study findings include definitions, rationales for using mastery learning, instructional practices, and assessments, as well as successes and challenges reported by the schools. The practices and resources described in the study report are intended to foster collaboration among schools and provide ideas for schools that are looking to start or expand mastery learning programs.
