This paper discusses the case of a firm that owns a fleet of end items and a repair facility for conducting periodic scheduled maintenance of the end items. If the number of units of operational end items is less than required, the firm can correct the deficiency by taking several courses of action. The optimal set of actions to be taken by the firm under various assumptions is determined. A numerical example is solved using both mathematical and graphical methods.

In a large class of decision problems under uncertainty, death, disability, and reductions in wealth enter the analysis as crucial arguments in the utility function. Much of the literature in public health and safety programs, insurance programs, and clinical decision-making concerns itself with optimal behavior in the presence of risk in these variables. This paper sets out, primarily, to describe the assumptions which typically underlie these analyses and demonstrate why they may be too restrictive for models which deal with death, disability, and disbursement variables. An alternative scheme is proposed.

Since World War II the services have used the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) to screen draftees and enlistment applications. This procedure assumes that higher scores on the AFQT indicate a higher productivity of individuals in the armed forces. This paper examines some of the evidence for this assumption.

The specific problem addressed is that of empirically estimating the potential impact of a large scale oil spill into the public waters on the economy of a nearby coastal community. Taking two areas as case studies, the sensitivity of their economies to exogenous changes in income is estimated using an economic base model. The potential is then calculated from the amount of income directly susceptible to oil pollution damages.

Some of the problems involved in the enforcement of riverine curfews are described. Simple models are constructed which compare the up-and-back patrol with a sensor-oriented response force and indicate the reduction in required forces permitted by the use of sensors. The importance of early upstream detection of a potential river transitor and of fast reaction by the pursuit vehicle are stressed. It is shown that when a section of river is to be under tight surveillance by friendly watercraft, a reduction in pursuit forces can be achieved with sensors providing that the pursuit boats are able to react before a potential transitor can complete three-quarters of his river crossing.
