Research for Counter Insurgencies

Some of the problems involved in the enforcement of riverine curfews are described. Simple models are constructed which compare the up-and-back patrol with a sensor-oriented response force and indicate the reduction in required forces permitted by the use of sensors. The importance of early upstream detection of a potential river transitor and of fast reaction by the pursuit vehicle are stressed. It is shown that when a section of river is to be under tight surveillance by friendly watercraft, a reduction in pursuit forces can be achieved with sensors providing that the pursuit boats are able to react before a potential transitor can complete three-quarters of his river crossing.
