The eight-county Allegheny Region of Pennsylvania is 84% forested and comprises one of the state's most valuable timbersheds. Much of this area is inaccessible to conventional logging equipment due to steep slopes, poor drainage, and high erodability. For this reason, there has been a recently growing interest in using cable yarders to harvest these areas. A computer simulation model has been developed to aid in investigating the feasibility of cable logging in this region. This paper explains the design of the model, discusses the field data collected, evaluates the model, and makes recommendations for further data acquisition and model refinement.

The computerized adaptive version of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery will use a Bayesian procedure for computing test scores. Properties of three common Bayesian procedures are examined in this research memorandum. The results show that the procedures are almost equally reliable and that reliability drops if item parameters change from paper-pencil to computerized administration.

The structure and development of the Total Force Enlistment Program Simulation is described in this Research Memorandum. The simulation analyzes changes in inventories of enlisted active-duty and reserve personnel associated with changes in the number of active-duty accessions and their distribution among enlistment programs. The simulation is based on continuation and affiliation behavior of individuals in six enlistment programs as observed in recent years. Total accessions and their distribution among enlistment programs and ratings are inputs to the simulation. The effects of changing these inputs are simulated by comparing the future inventories associated with two different accession profiles.

This Research Memorandum presents technical appendixes to supplement the Total Force Enlistment Programs Simulation. It is divided into four sections. Appendix A contains a guide to assist users of the simulation methodology. In addition to a detailed example of the use of the simulation, it discusses some of the potential uses not explored in Volume I. Appendix B is a description of the methods used in computing the active-duty inventories and continuation behavior. It also lists some of the important active-duty data elements used in the simulation, as well as the major computer programs used to generate these data. Appendix C presents similar descriptions for the SELRES data. A flowchart of the simulation methodology and annotated versions of the simulation programs appear in Appendix D.

The objective of this document was to develop a model that simulates the interactions between a number of close air support aircraft and helicopters on a flight deck during an amphibious assault. The model is currently configured for operations aboard an LHA Amphibious Assault Ship flight deck with two types of transport helicopters and the AV-8 HARRIER Attack Aircraft. The model application presented here considers the maximum number of AV-8 HARRIERs that could operate effectively with a composite helicopter squadron during the amphibious assault of a Marine Amphibious Unit.

Summarizes the work and finding of the Enlisted Manpower, Personnel and Training study conducted by a team of analysts at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA). The study examined ways the Navy can most cost effectively attract and retain the enlisted personnel it needs when it is growing and when faced by stronger competition from the civilian sector and other services. Detailed descriptions of the analysis have been published in a series of CNA publications; this report summarizes those works and highlights the main findings relevant to the Navy's manpower needs.

CNA is developing the Aviation Logistics Model (ALM), a simulation model of aviation maintenance and supply aboard an aircraft carrier. The model will be used to support CNA's effort to improve supply and repair policies. ALM is based on a new methodology designed to take full advantage of the structured maintenance and supply data collected on Visual Information Display System-Maintenance Action Forms (VIDS-MAFs). This research memorandum shows the directions being taken during the development process and assumptions being built into the model. It contains an overview of the idea behind the model and the intended use of the model, and a technical description of the current direction of model development.

This paper discusses the trend among simulation designers toward the construction of models of the 'middle range' that are designed in an attempt to resolve the tension between the 'contextual particularity' of events and the apparent order and organization of events in the form of general laws and theory. This paper underscores this preference both in comparison to more abstract experiments designed to uncover general laws and 'real world' experiments designed to describe the uniqueness of particular events.
