An Examination of the Repatriated Prisoners of War Data Bank

We examine the Repatriated Prisoners of War Data Bank (RPWDB), which primarily includes information for 1978 through 1997 for repatriated prisoners of war (RPOWs). Our strategy is to explore the files and categorize them with respect to type of data, number of unique RPOWs in the files by year, data variable available for use, and summary details for number variables. We find that, of the 38 files on the RPWDB, 21 have data for Vietnam-era RPOWs. Of these, we find 13 files that are useful for research purposes and 8 that are either administrative tracking files or an extract of another file. Appendix A details the number of occurrences of each RPOW by file, while appendix B shows the same information for the control group. Appendices C through J contains the details of the relevant information for each of the 13 files holding data relevant to research use.

Answering the 9-1-1 Call: U.S. Military and Naval Crisis Response Activity, 1977-1991

In the 15-year period of 1977 through 1991, U.S. military forces responded to international crises or incidents in 83 cases. This information memorandum presents key findings from historical data in three studies on U.S. military activity since World War II. It examines the questions of whether there is a baseline global demand for U.S. crisis response activity and what impact the Soviet collapse had on the level of U.S. activity. More specifically, the memorandum discusses the role of naval forces in U.S. crisis response activity, focusing on the steady frequency of naval responses over time, the important role played by carriers and the Marine Corps in those responses, the participation of naval forces in all cases involving terrorism, and the increasing concentration of naval crisis response activity in the Middle East during the 1980s.
