Risk Management: An Overview

October 4, 2012 In September 2007, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Preparedness Directorate issued a competitive training grant to CNA to build a national training curriculum on homeland security risk management for state and local officials. Three homeland security risk management courses were developed to provide consistent training on core topics and help state and local personnel understand and manage the risks they face. The web-based and instructor-led training helped decision-makers at the state and local levels better understand the risks their communities face from different threats and hazards; use the results of that risk analysis to inform strategic, operational, and tactical decisions; and complete annual threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) initiatives by reviewing fundamental risk management principles.
