The Project Management Institute's College of Performance Management (PMI-CPM) has established the "Gary Christle Leadership Excellence Individual Award" to honor CNA Analyst, Gary Christle.

Christle joined CNA in 2000 as an acquisition executive and is responsible for policies regarding contractors' internal costs and schedule control systems, i.e., Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS). Prior to joining CNA, he was Deputy for Acquisition Management, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition, Technology and Logistics).

PMI is the leading international, non-profit organization dedicated to the disciplines of project management and performance measurement to include EVMS and other initiatives. This new award honoring Christle is separate from the PMI's "Gaylord E. (Gary) Christle Scholarship," which is open to any student enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing a bachelors, masters, or doctoral degree in acquisition management and/or project management. The endowed scholarship has been awarded annually since the 2001-2002 academic year.

The nominating criteria for the annual Christle Leadership award are:

  1. The nominee will be a leader in his or her community and will have promoted an environment of cooperation whether it is between customer and supplier or within the government or a company. This is not a one-time effort but ongoing examples of leadership by the nominee.
  2. The nominee must have made significant contributions to the development and/or understanding of earned value management that historically has and will continue to distinguish their work. The contribution should be a definable body of work as demonstrated through one or more of the following: speaking, teaching/training, research, publications, professional practice, etc.
  3. The nominee must show ability to move forward with solutions that effect change and management acceptance of earned value management as a positive and predictive manager's tool.
  4. The nominee must have made significant contributions in promotion of the use of earned value management as a management tool, fostering positive working relationships, and effecting meaningful change.
  5. Nominee does not have to be a PMI-CPM member.

The first Christle award recipient was Dr. Robert B. Rovinsky, Director, IT Enterprise Services for the Federal Aviation Administration.
