Alexandria, Va. — General Robert Magnus, a former aviator who was second in command of the Marine Corps before retiring from active duty in 2008, has joined CNA as a Distinguished Fellow.

"We’re so honored that General Magnus has joined CNA and our group of Fellows," said Christine Fox, President of CNA's Center for Naval Analyses. "He held a broad range of operational and staff assignments during his 39-year career with the Corps, and as a result, he brings a unique perspective to our research."

Following his graduation from the University of Virginia in 1969, General Magnus was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. His formal military education includes Naval Aviator Training, U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the National War College.

Among his many operational assignments, he served as Commanding Officer, Medium Helicopter Squadron 365; Commander, Marine Corps Air Bases Western Area; and Deputy Commander, Marine Forces Pacific.

Later in his career, at the Pentagon, he served as Assistant Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations, and Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources. He was named Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps in 2005.
