On Tuesday, September 28 the Stability and Development Program of CNA Strategic Studies will host a workshop on key findings of the study “Counterinsurgency on the Ground in Afghanistan: How Different Units Adapted to Local Conditions" at the Army and Navy Club, 901 Seventeenth Street NW, Washington, DC, from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The study, by Dr. Jerry Meyerle, Megan Katt, and Jim Gavrilis, includes 15 vignettes, from 10 provinces, on units from the US Marines, Army, and Special Forces; the British Army and Marines; the Dutch Army and Marines; and the Canadian Army. The workshop will feature a number of officers, many of whom were involved in these operations and interviewed for these cases, who will describe the diverse conditions their units faced, how they responded to those conditions, what worked and what didn't, and the successes they achieved. Participants will also discuss recurring themes from the vignettes, lessons learned at the tactical and operational levels, and what they mean for future conflicts.
The workshop is open to the public, but attendees must register. To do so, email your name, affiliation, email address, and phone number to Megan Katt (no registration fee is required). For other questions regarding the workshop, contact Loretta Ebner.
