"Counterinsurgency in Modern Warfare" July 22, 2008 (RSVP Required*)
CNA will host a discussion on "Counterinsurgency in Modern Warfare" by senior military scholars on Tuesday, July 22, from noon-1:30 pm at the National Press Club, Ballroom, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC. Lunch will be provided.

Panelists will be: Dr. Carter Malkasian, director of the CNA Stability and Development Program, who will discuss counterinsurgency in Iraq, Dr. Daniel Marston, research fellow, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University, who will discuss counterinsurgency in Afghanistan, and John Nagl, Senior Fellow, Center for a New American Security, who will discuss U.S. Army counterinsurgency doctrine from Vietnam to the publication of the new counterinsurgency field manual (FM 3-24) in 2006. Moderating the panel and contributing to the discussion will be counterinsurgency expert Dr. David J. Kilcullen, Special Advisor for Counterinsurgency to the Secretary of State.

Malkasian and Marston are editors of the book Counterinsurgency in Modern Warfare which examines the development of counterinsurgency (through the discussion of the strategies, doctrine and tactics) used in wars throughout the Twentieth Century to the present-day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two of America's top Arabists. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East and chief of mission in Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon, and Graham Fuller, a former CIA station chief and NIO for the Near East and South Asia, will discuss the topic.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a SARS preparedness plan drafted by CNA. The meeting brings together all the regional public health leaders to discuss the plan.

Workshop examined the issue of social change and dissent in Iran. Iranian society today is overwhelmingly young, literate, and underemployed. Five speakers will look at social and demographic trends in Iran as drivers of change.

CNA to host Roundtable on Strategic Decisions Facing Gulf Countries During the Next Decade

CNA hosts bioterrorism workshop for the District of Columbia's Department of Health (DoH) managers and representatives from other city agencies.
The workshop will include presentations on the status of the DoH bioterrorism preparedness plan and the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile (NPS) distribution plan - both of which were developed by CNA. Chips Stewart analyst will participants through a session on a hypothetical deployment of the NPS.

The Emergency Health and Medical Services Administration (EHMSA) sponsored this workshop, and includes a focused discussion and overviews of two of the District of Columbia Department of Health's bioterrorism plans.

General Jack Sheehan, USMC (Ret.) to launch the series with remarks entitled "About Central Asia and the Caspian: So What?". Following his retirement from the U.S. military in 1997, General Sheehan served as the Secretary of Defense's Special Advisor for Central Asia.

CNA CEO leads delegation to Beijing
CNA President Robert J. Murray lead a delegation of CNA analysts to Beijing to engage in academic exchanges with Chinese analysts on U.S.-China relations as well as the issue of Taiwan. The CNA delegation also met with Vice Minister Zhou Mingwei from the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office.

Speakers include Professor Thomas McKenna, the leading U.S. academic on the region; Bob Scher, OSD/ISA Director for Maritime Southeast Asia; and CNA analyst Lyall Breckon.

Transforming Defense: A Current Assessment and the Road Ahead

CNA hosts annual conferences to stimulate discussion and debate on important national security issues. Recent CNA conferences have made important contributions to dialogue on such issues as military readiness, major security concerns facing the incoming Bush administration, and U.S. security strategy in East Asia.

This year's conference, Transforming Defense: A Current Assessment and the Road Ahead, focused on defense transformation two years into the Bush administration and one year after the start of Operation Enduring Freedom. The conference examined recent progress and the road ahead in defense transformation. Our goal was to achieve a better understanding of what transformation entails, what challenges lie in the future, and how we might meet those challenges.

CNA and the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Educational Governance, Finance, Policymaking and Management hold joint forum on recent research concerning the impact of technology and telecommunications technologies on schools and extended opportunities for learning. Participants will include representatives from the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Education, other federal officials, experts in the field of education, and CNA Education Center analysts.

Representatives from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Justice to participate, as well as representatives of nursing home providers associations, trade organizations, and advocacy groups for the elderly.

Participants include police department, police union, and community representatives from four cities that participated in CNA's racial profiling project. Capt. Ron Davis of the Oakland, CA police department to speak about the strengths and weaknesses of data collection and analysis with respect to identifying and measuring racial profiling.

CNA hosts first conference on racial profiling
Participants include police department and police union representatives along with community representatives from the four cities participating in CNA's racial profiling project. Chief Oliver of Richmond, VA will give the keynote address. The conference will address the overall issue of data collection and analysis to investigate the existence and nature of racial profiling, and will offer technical assistance to the participants.

CNA analyst Rick Miller Receives Excellence Award for Methodology
from he International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) The ISPOR Award Committee selected the winner based upon publications that have appeared in respected peer-review journals, books, and reports for the preceding 18 months. The award was given for an article Rick Miller and Ted Frech from the University of California at Santa Barbara published on productivity in the pharmaceutical industry.
