The Sixth KIMS-CNA Conference
"The Changing Security Environment and the Continuing North Korean Military Threat"
Thursday, November 8, 2012
Lotte Hotel, Seoul
CNA and the Korea Institute for Maritime Strategy (KIMS) mutually host an annual international academic conference in venues that alternate between Korea and the United States. The purpose of this collaboration is to enhance the two nation’s naval cooperation and collaboration, including contributions to deterring North Korean aggression as well as facilitating the growing regional and global role of the ROK Navy. Given the growing prominence of maritime related security issues in East Asia, this relationship provides an important venue for Track II discussions that focus on the maritime domain of North East Asia.
This year’s conference, the 6th in the series, focused on forthcoming regional leadership changes, including in the Republic of Korea and the impact of the United States’ new defense strategy on the security situation in Northeast Asia and on the Korean Peninsula. As always the conference explored ways to enhance effective Korean-U.S. naval collaboration on readiness and as well as explore deterrence and responses to North Korean provocations short of all-out war.
