Thinking Strategically Across ARRA Funds Regional Meeting

Speakers Include: Maura Policelli, Senior Advisor for External Affairs, U.S. Department of Education; Dr. Ellen Mandinach, Research Analyst, CNA; Dr. Rolf Blank, Director of Indicators & Policy Research, Council of Chief School State Officers

The meeting will provide opportunities for stakeholders from 17 states to hear from and meet with key leaders from the U.S. Department of Education and other national experts to discuss the Obama Administration’s education reform priorities and funding opportunities as well as the various American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) initiatives. This forum is being planned and hosted jointly by the Regional Educational Laboratories for the Appalachia, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions and the Appalachia, Florida, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast Regional Comprehensive Centers at the request of the U.S. Department of Education. State chiefs within the region were invited to select a team of six participants.


Turning Around Chronically Low Performing Schools — 5-part Webinar Series

Join Dr. Robert Muller, Director of REL Appalachia, and Dr. Rebecca Herman, American Institutes for Research, for a series of conversations around the most current research in turning around chronically low performing schools. Dr. Herman was chairman of the national panel that wrote the What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide on Turning Around Chronically Low Performing Schools. In this series of webinars, Dr. Herman will discuss the four research-based recommendations from the Practice Guide and how they can be used to help district and school administrators develop an effective turnaround process. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Herman. In this interactive session, participants are encouraged to use the online chatroom to comment and submit questions.


Dropouts in Tennessee and Strategies for Prevention

Conducted in partnership with the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents, this event provided a discussion of dropout prevention in Tennessee and reviewed the recommendations presented in the What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on Dropout Prevention. It was designed to inform local education agencies on evidence-based recommendations for preventing dropouts and ways in which administrators can structure efforts aimed at individual students and school-wide communities.

Registering Students with Language Backgrounds other than English in Tennessee

Focusing on REL Appalachia's "Registering students from language backgrounds other than English" ((Issues & Answers, October 2007), this online workshop provided an in-depth discussion and guidance on issues surrounding the registration of students from language backgrounds other than English. Tennessee policies for registering students with non-English language backgrounds were reviewed and examples of naming conventions for the five most common languages in Tennessee were presented.
