Afghanistan Panel Event, 17 December 2007

Four analysts from CNA recently returned from eight weeks in Afghanistan, where they observed the work of the provincial reconstruction teams (PRTs). On 17 December, the team hosted a panel discussion on Afghanistan at CNA. Dr. Carter Malkasian, Dr. Whitney Raas, and Dr. Fred Thompson discussed what the team members learned while they were on the ground in Afghanistan. Their talks covered the role of a provincial reconstruction team, changes in the insurgency since 2006, and the effect of interference from Pakistan, from the context of three different provinces. Other panelists included John G. Fox, the Director of the Office for Afghanistan at the U.S. Department of State, and Michelle Parker, a CFR International Affairs Fellow at the RAND Corporation. Journalist Elizabeth Rubin, author of numerous influential articles on Afghanistan in The New York Times Magazine, moderated.
