Wallace C. Gregson, Lieutenant General (USMC, Retired) is a Senior Fellow with CNA China Studies. A 1968 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, General Gregson has had a distinguished career as both an operational Marine and as a national-level policymaker focused on Asian security affairs. He has served at every level of command from platoon through COCOM service component commander, to include service with the 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam (1969-70). Prior to his retirement, he served as the Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific; Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific; and Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Bases, Pacific. From May 2009 until April 2011, Gregson served in the Pentagon as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian & Pacific Security Affairs, developing U.S. defense policy across the Asia-Pacific region. He has also served as Director for Asia and Pacific Affairs in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy and as Executive Military Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence. Gregson holds master's degrees in strategic planning from the Naval War College and in international relations from Salve Regina College, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service by the University of Maryland.
