Edward J. Schmitz, Ph.D. is a principal research scientist in the Resource Analysis Division, specializing in work force planning and policy analysis. Prior to coming to CNA in 2006, he worked on the research faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, with the Department of the Navy CIO, the Navy Recruiting Command, the Senate Budget Committee, and the Army Research Institute.

Some of his accomplishments have included:

  • working with testing psychologists to develop improved ways to match applicants with jobs
  • evaluating the impact of military education benefits on recruiting, retention, educational outcomes, and costs
  • designing the Navy’s systems for assessing the performance of information technology services and measuring customer satisfaction with services
  • identifying where to best place recruiters geographically
  • developing strategies for developing language, regional expertise, and culture in the military

Schmitz’s outside activities include being a science fair judge, a tutor, a member of the Fairfax County Library Foundation board, and a member of the Andrew Carnegie Society board—raising scholarship money for Carnegie Mellon University students.
