Burnham C. McCaffree Jr. Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Retired), was a surface warfare officer. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve, attended the Naval Academy, and served in an aircraft carrier, a heavy cruiser, three destroyers, and three amphibious ships. He commanded a destroyer, an amphibious transport dock, and an amphibious squadron, conducting operations in the Atlantic Ocean and deploying to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Norwegian Seas and the Indian Ocean. Ashore he spent three years in Norfolk, two years in Newport, one year in South Vietnam, and six years in Washington. As a flag officer he was director of two divisions on the Chief of Naval Operation’s staff, was the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Logistics), and commanded the amphibious warfare forces in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Since his retirement from the Navy in 1988, McCaffree has been a consultant for several defense-related research companies and for the federal government. He has been a part-time employee of CNA’s Center of Naval Analyses for the past 20 years, now serving as a research scientist in the Advanced Technology & Systems Analysis Division. His work has included research in and analysis of Navy and defense programs and systems, particularly in the fields of expeditionary warfare, mine warfare, and naval logistics. He originated the Navy’s collection of logistics replenishment activity and archiving those data at CNA.
