About Us

The CNA SMART Justice Innovation Center provides analytic-based information relevant to police officers, criminal justice operators, researchers, public officials, and citizens alike. Using the innovative principles and practices of strategic management, analytics, evidence-based research, and enabling technologies (SMART), we aim to promote the application of science in support of policing and other criminal justice operations. The SMART Justice Innovation Center works on criminal justice issues ranging from smart policing, justice and corrections operations, critical incident analysis, research and planning, and policy formulation.

Through this center we strive to maintain currency and relevancy, and to be a voice for progress and change for law enforcement and the remainder of the criminal justice community. We provide up-to-date analysis, research summaries, trends, and innovations, by leveraging multiple sources such as - our expertise and work on the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Smart Policing Initiative; real-world event analysis of critical law enforcement incidents; resources from outside associations, universities, and organizations; and our cadre of subject matter experts. In addition, we encourage dialogue and debate and invite our audience to submit papers for inclusion on our website and for distribution.

The SMART Justice Innovation Center follows CNA’s tradition of providing objective, empirical research and analysis in order to educate the criminal justice community of effective law enforcement strategies, policies, and best practices. Furthermore, we take a multi-disciplinary, field-based "real world" approach to our work to provide tools needed to tackle the complex challenges of making policing more efficient and keeping our country safe and strong.
